About the Opportunity
Are you an experienced tax professional who enjoys the technical side of tax preparation, takes pride in getting the details right, and appreciates the flexibility of working remotely?
Our client is a growing, independently owned tax and accounting firm committed to delivering exceptional service through accurate, thoughtful, and dependable tax solutions.
As the firm continues to grow, the owner is looking for an experienced Tax Preparer to join the team for the upcoming tax season. This is an opportunity to work directly with the owner in a supportive, collaborative environment where your expertise, independence, and attention to detail will be valued.
What makes this opportunity different? This is a behind-the-scenes tax preparation role with no direct client-facing responsibilities. You’ll have the flexibility to manage your workday while focusing on what you do best: preparing accurate returns, solving tax-related challenges, and helping a growing firm deliver excellent results.
For the right person, there may also be opportunities to return for future tax seasons and grow with the business.
What You’ll Be Doing
Prepare and self-review federal and state income tax returns, primarily individual returns (Form 1040), including those with small-business income and related schedules.
Prepare S corporation returns (Form 1120S) and assist with other business returns as needed.
Develop accurate, organized workpapers to support tax return preparation and review.
Review client-provided financial documents for accuracy, completeness, and potential discrepancies.
Identify potential tax planning opportunities and areas that may require additional review.
Research federal and state tax regulations to ensure accurate, compliant filings.
Independently manage assigned tax preparation work, prioritize responsibilities, and consistently meet deadlines.
Track time spent on engagements, including research and training.
Collaborate directly with the owner to resolve questions, address review notes, and maintain quality standards.
Maintain strict confidentiality when handling sensitive financial and tax information.
What We’re Looking For
We’re looking for someone who brings strong technical skills, a high level of personal accountability, and a positive, solutions-oriented approach to their work.
Required Qualifications
Minimum of 3 years of hands-on experience preparing individual and business tax returns, particularly Forms 1040 and 1120S.
Strong experience with individual tax returns involving small-business income, including Schedule C.
At least 2 years of experience with tax planning and identifying potential tax-saving opportunities.
Ability to prepare accurate returns independently and conduct a thorough self-review before submitting work.
Current knowledge of federal and state tax laws and regulations.
A valid PTIN for the 2027 tax filing season by the start of employment.
Experience using professional tax preparation software.
Proficiency with Excel and comfort working with cloud-based document management and collaboration tools.
Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage competing deadlines during tax season.
Excellent attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and professional communication.
Highly Preferred
Experience using Drake Tax software.
Arizona residency.
Enrolled Agent (EA) designation or CPA license.
Proficiency with QuickBooks Online.
Experience preparing partnership returns (Form 1065).
Beyond the Technical Skills — The Right Fit Matters!
Because you’ll be working directly with the owner in a small, growing firm, we’re looking for someone who brings not only technical expertise but also a collaborative, professional approach.
You’ll likely thrive in this role if you:
Take ownership of your work and pride in producing accurate, high-quality results.
Have a calm, positive, and encouraging personality, even during the demands of tax season.
Work independently, manage your time effectively, and follow through on commitments.
Communicate proactively and aren’t afraid to ask thoughtful questions when needed.
Welcome constructive feedback and view review notes as an opportunity to improve.
Enjoy solving problems, researching answers, and continuously developing your expertise.
Value being part of a small team where trust, accountability, and mutual respect matter.
